NY State Parks Recreation and Historic PreservationRising above the western banks of the Hudson River, Bear Mountain is a beloved and well-used State Park providing a natural respite with spectacular views and a rich history for visitors from New York City and surrounding areas. At the heart of the Park, the Bear Mountain Inn, with its rustic stone base and distinctive natural log structure, is considered to be one of the finest examples of Adirondack Camp architecture. In recognition of the historic significance of Bear Mountain Inn and Park, it is listed on the National and NY State Register of Historic Places.
BKSK’s work involves the design and construction of a new restroom building, a modern interpretation of the historic architecture of Bear Mountain. The project began with extensive site master planning work, to understand the siting of the structure within the larger context of the park. Working together with Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects (who were the Prime consultant on this project) BKSK located the new restroom building adjacent to the ‘Confluence’, a new landscape feature designed to serve as a crossroads of trails, a new playground, and access to Hessian Lake.
