NYC Department of Parks & RecreationBKSK Architects optimized the existing Cunningham Park Maintenance Facility to expand the space and functionality for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. The new hub facility supports the needs of several adjacent Parks Maintenance Districts. To centralize operations, we performed a detailed programming and conditions analysis, synthesizing data from different units within the agency. Through a series of test fits and schematic layouts we arrived at a program-driven design to renovate the building and enlarge its footprint though open-air structures to meet all maintenance and storage needs.
The Maintenance and Operations Facility provides vehicle parking, storage, muster vehicle space, staff lockers, bathrooms, offices, charging stations and maintenance bays. The process to identify the program needs and understand their logistical requirements was complex, involving sorting the qualitative and quantitative feedback from users, presenting the findings and the limitations of the space, and aligning that with the budget to produce several options through an iterative design process. Producing cost estimates with each design phase facilitated the process of addressing budget constraints.
