Hort Family Museum at the Art Omi Pavilions

Susan and Michael Hort began collecting contemporary art in 1985, driven by a commitment to “collecting in depth and supporting young artists.” Over the past five decades, their collection has grown into one of the most significant private collections of contemporary art, with works loaned to museums worldwide and attracting thousands of art professionals to New York City each year. The Hort Family Museum, designed by BKSK, extends this legacy by creating a public space dedicated to both established and underrecognized artists.

“Tucked into the hill,” the two-story museum is designed as an extension of its landscape, with a corrugated metal envelope that echoes the surrounding terrain while protecting the collection within. Together with the Visitor Center, the Pavilions trail, and carefully selected sustainable materials—including timber that evokes the surrounding forest and zinc cladding that reflects the region’s shale substrate—the project creates a seamless connection between art, architecture, and landscape. The museum invites visitors to explore, engage, and experience a lasting cultural resource rooted in its natural setting.
