Aerial view of a small airfield surrounded by green fields and forests, with hills and winding roads in the background under a clear blue sky at sunrise or sunset. A person walks on a gravel path toward a modern, rectangular building with metal siding and large windows. The building is surrounded by tall grass, wildflowers, and a tree under a clear sky. A spacious, minimalist interior with white walls, high ceilings, and large windows. Three people are present: one standing near a wall, one in the center, and one looking down from an upper level. A modern interior staircase with large windows overlooks a grassy landscape with trees and a small pavilion in the distance; sunlight streams through the windows, illuminating the wooden wall.

Susan and Michael Hort began collecting in 1985, quickly building one of the most significant contemporary art collections of the past 50 years, with a focus on “collecting in depth and supporting young artists.” Their collection is loaned to museums worldwide and draws thousands of art professionals to New York City each year. The Hort Family Museum, designed by BKSK, will showcase both established and underrecognized artists. The two-story building, “tucked into the hill,” features a corrugated metal envelope that mirrors the surrounding landscape while protecting the collection. Along with the Visitor Center, the Pavilions trail, and sustainably sourced materials—timber that evokes the forest and zinc cladding that reflects the shale substrate—the project seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and landscape, inviting exploration and offering lasting public benefit.
