ConfidentialThis study explores the creation of a new 300,000-square-foot vertical campus on a Midtown site adjacent to Hudson Yards. The design was developed to appeal to a university seeking to establish a presence in New York City or expand an existing one.
The project is envisioned as a world-class facility that enhances the university’s brand and position as a leader in its field, helping to attract and retain top talent. It is also conceived as a model for next-generation sustainability and building technology, reinforcing New York City’s position as a global leader in education and innovation. The campus demonstrates the potential for a mix of academic, social, and residential spaces that foster a collegial and interactive community, encouraging informal learning and active social engagement.
The proposed building is organized around an internal campus “quad” that serves as the heart of the vertical campus, creating opportunities for collaboration, informal learning, and social interaction. The quad also establishes a connection to nature and brings natural light deep into the building.
The residential tower is organized into a series of residential “neighborhoods” designed to build community and foster a strong sense of belonging. Views toward Midtown and Hudson Yards are maximized throughout the residences, strengthening the connection between the campus and the city while giving students a distinct sense of place.
Two schemes were proposed and explored.
