Schmul Park Public Restroom

This new 1,000 square foot public restroom and maintenance office is a component of a larger project led by James Corner Field Operations to revitalize a beloved neighborhood park and playground on the edge of what was once the largest landfill in the country, Fresh Kills. Drawing upon the unique ellipse geometry of JCFO’s landscape design, the structure’s curved form is broken at the main access points revealing a rich yellow—like that of a cracked egg—inviting the public in while also connecting to the bright colors in the adjacent play area.

The building makes principles of ecological design tangible and beautiful. A planted roof channels rainwater to an adjacent rain garden by way of a bold trellis.
