NYC Department of Parks & Recreation

As part of a NYC Parks Department Requirements Contract, we were challenged to design a collection of small service structures in various city parks throughout the five boroughs. Issues of durability/minimal maintenance, public safety, cost consciousness and energy efficiency were strong design determinants. Notwithstanding those constraints, we have conceived each small building as a larger civic gesture, unique to the character and history of the public park where it will be situated. At each park, contextually designed elements respond to the unique site conditions and historic significance, creating a sense of place for visitors. Their sustainable design celebrates ecological awareness through form, water, energy-efficient operating systems and materials carefully considered for durability, longevity, recycled content, and place of origin.
