West 12th Street Rowhouse
The interior of this very narrow West Village rowhouse was transformed from a cramped collection of rooms into a series of stacked open loft spaces. The gut renovation left only several historic fireplaces intact, as all other original 19th century interior details had been removed in previous renovations. Using its unusually narrow 14’-2” clear inside dimension to full advantage, the plans feature a single major room at the front and back of each floor. A custom blackened steel and walnut tread stair operates as a vertical organizing element against a custom Marmarino plaster feature wall that ascends five stories, from the ground floor to a new roof bulkhead. A fully planted roof terrace allows views of downtown and offers expanded living space.

"BKSK’s plan preserved historic fireplaces while gutting the house all the way to its floor joists to create a contemporary and open loft-like design."
