Ardsley Avenue Residence

Modernity meets tradition in the renovation of a 1,600 square foot residence within a classic 1930’s building originally designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon (architects for the Empire State Building).

The existing building included dumbwaiters linked to a central kitchen and maid’s service. The building’s kitchen is long gone and contemporary living priorities have replaced the enclosed service kitchen and maids’ bath with a larger kitchen that opens out to a living and dining area. The renovation emphasizes an abundance of natural light and the layout affords cross ventilation, and sweeping views of the Hudson River. The design utilizes a spine of custom cabinetry to create a unified aesthetic throughout the apartment, and allows rooms to open to each other in a controlled fashion while increasing storage capacity substantially. This quietly modern aesthetic is set against the building’s traditional detailing and overall ambiance, accentuating the best of both.
