A person in a reflective vest walks past a large, red-brick building with black trim on a city street. Cars are parked along the curb and the sky is partly cloudy. A brick building with four stories, large windows, and ground-floor storefronts labeled “For Lease.” Several parked cars and bicycles are in front; the street is lined with trash bags and city buildings.

Three mid-nineteenth century buildings in the South Street Seaport Historic District are reinterpreted for modern day purpose. After more than a century of heavy utilitarian use on what was a thriving working waterfront, 104-106 South Street experienced decades of devolution before the current owners contracted BKSK to direct a thoughtful restoration and rooftop expansion that will recall, and celebrate, earlier chapters in the complex’s history. New ground floor storefronts with deep awnings will help rekindle some of the neighborhood’s storied bustle.
