A city street view with tall brick buildings, a wall mural, traffic lights, cars, and people walking. The sky is partly cloudy, and a large decorative design is featured on one buildings wall. The image shows the front facade of a modern building with large glass windows and doors on the ground floor, brickwork above, and the word SIGNAGE visible on one of the glass panels. Tall, modern building with a mix of gray and reddish-brown exterior, large windows, and a flat roof, set among white, simplified blocks representing neighboring structures under a blue sky.

The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved BKSK’s design for a new affordable and supportive housing building at 257 Canal Street in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District Extension. Developed by Alembic Community Development and The Children’s Village, the 222-foot-tall, 20-story building will replace an existing two-story, no-style structure on the site. Its finely detailed masonry façade, limestone base, and carefully proportioned massing respond to the scale and character of the surrounding historic streetscape.

The building will provide 88 permanently affordable rental homes, including supportive housing for young adults aging out of foster care, alongside community spaces and ground-floor retail. A mural by artist Nancy Blum will further enrich the building’s public presence and contribute to the character of the Canal Street streetscape.
