Harry Kendall honored in TriBeCa
The Church Street School for Music and Art honored BKSK co-founder Harry Kendall for his and BKSK’s many contributions to the Tribeca community during their annual benefit, The Event, on March 8th at the Tribeca Rooftop. A long-time resident of the neighborhood, Harry moved to Tribeca in 1983 and founded BKSK in 1985. In many ways, Harry, the firm, and the neighborhood grew up together. Though he is known for his thoughtful work in historic districts throughout New York City, BKSK’s proving ground was in his own neighborhood.
During his honoree presentation, Harry recalled the neighborhood’s transition to residential use and Church Street’s early incarnation, using the image and metaphor of the quintessential cascading loft staircase.
“These worn stairs and their complete lack of pretension led to so much beauty. They led to humble but ambitious institutions like Church Street. How many of the stairways remain? How many of those institutions remain? Well, this one does and it needs our support.” – Harry Kendall
